Religious Education

From EYFS to Year 5, our Religious Education curriculum follows the Religious Education Directory (RED), using the programme: To Know You More Clearly.

Throughout each academic year, children explore six branches of learning:

Creation and Covenant
Children explore God’s creation, the dignity of every human person and God’s loving relationship with humanity. They learn about God’s covenant with his people and consider our responsibility to care for one another and for our common home.

Prophecy and Promise
Children explore the prophets and God’s promise of salvation. During Advent, they learn how Christians prepare for and celebrate the birth of Jesus, recognising him as the fulfilment of God’s promise.

Galilee to Jerusalem
Children learn about the life and ministry of Jesus. Through Scripture, they encounter his teaching, miracles and relationships with others and consider what Jesus reveals about God and how we are called to follow him.

Desert to Garden
During Lent and Easter, children journey with Jesus towards his Passion, Death and Resurrection. They explore the meaning of sacrifice, forgiveness, hope and new life and consider how Christians are called to live during Lent and celebrate the joy of Easter.

To the Ends of the Earth
Children learn about the Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost and explore the mission of the Church. They discover how the Holy Spirit strengthened the first disciples and continues to guide Christians in sharing the Good News today.

Dialogue and Encounter
Children develop an understanding of Christianity in dialogue with other religions, traditions and worldviews. They learn to recognise and respect the beliefs of others while developing a secure understanding of their own Catholic faith.

Year 6 will continue to follow the Come and See Religious Education programme this academic year.

Gabriel’s Special Pilgrimage to Lourdes

This summer, our Year 1 pupil Gabriel enjoyed an exciting and very special pilgrimage to Lourdes with his family and the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Lourdes has been a very important part of Gabriel’s family life for many years. His mum and dad have volunteered in Lourdes each summer for the past 20 years, so from a very young age Gabriel has experienced the warmth, faith and community that make the pilgrimage so special.

For Gabriel, Lourdes is a wonderful example of how faith is not only something we talk about, but something we live through prayer, service, friendship and caring for others.

This year, Gabriel was also able to take part in the school’s special prayer theme for the pilgrimage. Each year group was given a different group of people or intention to pray for, helping the whole school community to come together in prayer:

• EYFS: Our families
• Year 1: Our friends
• Year 2: Our school
• Year 3: People who are sick
• Year 4: People who are lonely
• Year 5: Our community and the wider world
• Year 6: Peace among nations

The children worked together to write their own prayers based on their year group’s theme. These prayers helped our pupils to think beyond themselves and to consider the people in their own lives, as well as those who may need our prayers, kindness and support.

During the pilgrimage, Gabriel explored the Chapel of St Paschal Baylon, one of the three beautiful semicircular outdoor alcove chapels surrounding the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. At the beginning of the week, Gabriel also had his hands blessed and proudly carried St Paschal Baylon’s prayer book through the Grotto before placing it in the prayer box.

For Gabriel, the beauty of Lourdes can be found in the little things – meeting people of all ages and abilities, seeing the kindness shown to elderly and disabled pilgrims, joining together in prayer and simply being part of something very special.

His experience also gave others a lovely glimpse of faith being lived out within family life. Even at such a young age, Gabriel is learning that pilgrimage is about walking alongside others, helping those in need and sharing moments of prayer and friendship.

It was wonderful for Gabriel to take the prayers of his friends with him to Lourdes and to experience, first-hand, a place where people from across the world come together in faith, hope and service.

When our pupils reach Year 10, they will have the opportunity to apply to take part in the annual Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes themselves. Gabriel’s experience shows that the journey can begin much earlier – through family, friendship, prayer and a willingness to care for others.
