Rationale
At St Paschal Baylon Catholic Primary School we believe it is our duty to provide children with an understanding of and respect for other cultures – United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Articles 29 and 31 – and are therefore committed to the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). Language learning both supports and celebrates the international factor and fosters children’s curiosity and understanding of the world. It teaches the key value of mutual respect, along with diversity, and encourages children to embrace social and cultural differences. We aim to develop an interest in speaking a second language to enable pupils of all backgrounds and abilities to communicate in practical situations and to grow into articulate global citizens. Our focus language at SPB is Spanish, one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. Not only does this provide children with good foundations for their KS3 language learning, but it also provides valuable insight into the cultures and societies where Spanish is a predominant language and makes children aware of how their lives can be enriched by multicultural awareness. Language learning opens them up to the world around them and provides many opportunities to those capable of speaking a foreign language such as travel, interpretation, translation and international jobs or jobs in international relations, aid, sales, or journalism. There are many natural links between learning a language and other areas of the curriculum. Most notably, it supports the oracy and literacy skills of speaking, listening and interacting. By singing, reciting, performing to an audience and responding to a range of aural stimuli, pupils learn how to communicate effectively. Language lessons promote enjoyment, confidence and respect for others, which permeates all that we do at SPB and supports the UNCRC Article 29, which states that education should develop every child’s talents, abilities and personality as well as encouraging respect for different cultures. The range of practical experiences we provide stimulates children’s creativity and develops enthusiastic learners who have a love of and positive attitude towards learning.
