Rationale
At St Paschal Baylon Catholic Primary School we hold the science curriculum at the core of our learning, recognising how science underpins all of our lives and advances in scientific discovery will affect us all. We provide a high-quality science education, allowing children to explore first hand and develop an awareness of the world around them through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Whilst building up a body of essential knowledge, children are encouraged to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. Our children are encouraged from Early Years to question, investigate and make links about the world around them. This continues throughout the school, allowing children to find things out for themselves and to become responsible citizens who care for the environment. We aim to inspire our children to have high expectations of themselves and the role that they may play as future scientists. We do this not only through our curriculum, but through inspirational activities during British Science Week; bringing in visitors with diverse scientific backgrounds and taking children on science focused outdoor learning opportunities such as the Recycling Discovery Centre and Knowsley Safari Park. We challenge stereotypes of what a scientist looks like and empower children with the knowledge that scientists come in many forms: sports people, medical professionals, laboratory workers, engineers to name a few! Science, more than ever, is changing our lives and is vital for the world’s future prosperity. Our aim is that pupils at St Paschal Baylon will leave our school as confident, curious individuals who will strive to take their learning further.
