Rationale
History at St Paschal Baylon is focused on learning from the past, whilst also learning about the past.
Our History curriculum encourages children to make links between the past, present and future and to develop their understanding of some of the historical models of good and responsible citizenship. Lessons are carefully planned and sequential, with each lesson focused on a question to answer, rather than a range of knowledge to acquire. Through this question-based approach, children are able to gain a better understanding of the ‘What? Where? Why? and How?’ of different time periods and to link these concepts to the events of today. Children are able to gain a better understanding of the world around them, by making links between different historical events and how they have shaped our modern-day world.
Children are encouraged to identify both successes and tragedies throughout history and are given the opportunity to critically analyse the events which have contributed to them. Children develop empathy for those who have experienced oppression and discrimination, and are able to understand the importance of learning from the mistakes of the past which have lead to the unfair treatment of various communities. Children are also encouraged to appreciate the successes of yesterday and to evaluate the positive impact of such successes on today.
At St Paschal Baylon, children are encouraged to view themselves as critical influencers and to become aware of how their own actions can have a huge impact on the future. They recognise the importance of consistently questioning events, situations, evidence and concepts in order to learn from them. We encourage children to identify bias, propaganda, inaccuracies, trends and patterns in history, in order to provide them with the skills of becoming independent, critical thinkers. Children progress through the History curriculum by building on and developing a range of skills and knowledge. Lessons provide children with the opportunity to interpret, debate and present findings through a range of creative and engaging activities. Moreover, curiosity is promoted through the encouragement of deeper-discussions, analysis, links to modern-day situations and opportunity to research and enquire. We aim to promote a love of History and to develop our children into critical thinkers who will one day, make a positive impact on the future!

Year 6: looking at how the Treaty of Versailles and Propaganda contributed to attitudes during WWII.
Year 5: learning about black inventors during Black History Month.
Year 5 played a game of pairs in which they had to match up the inventor with their invention. We discussed the importance of remembering the contributions of black people from all periods of history.
