The Curriculum at St. Paschal Baylon
Everything that we do at St Paschal Baylon Catholic Primary School centres around our Mission Statement of:
Following in the footsteps of Christ.
We live out this mission statement through developing an ethos and curriculum that allows our children to love, care, respect, achieve, forgive, learn and inspire.
As a Catholic school, we believe that fostering a knowledge of Christ and nurturing the spiritual, personal, moral and cultural development of our children is fundamental to all that we do.
We believe that all children in our school should have access to a broad and balanced curriculum that allows them to develop and achieve through a rich range of experiences. We intend for every pupil at St Paschal Baylon Catholic Primary School to have a sustained mastery of a range of key knowledge and skills that will enable them to become active, responsible, articulate, confident citizens of the future.
We are a Rights Respecting School which means that we work to ensure that our children have a knowledge and understanding of their rights and the rights of children around the world. This knowledge and respect of rights permeates our curriculum and all that we do.
Our Curriculum is underpinned by the following drivers:
Global Citizenship – an understanding of our rights and the rights of others
Initiative – helping pupils to grow as independent, capable and resilient learners
Growth – helping pupils to learn and grow in all areas of their life including spiritually and personally
As a teaching team, we have developed a broad knowledge-engaged curriculum that provides children with the knowledge and skills they need for the future and has relevance to their daily lives. We deliver the curriculum in a way which is appropriate to our children, our school and our city. We are committed to providing children with high quality lessons and a rich range of practical experiences to enhance their learning through using our school’s locality and the array of cultural and sporting experiences our city has to offer. We plan sequences of lessons that introduce vital life skills along with key knowledge from a carefully planned schema which will result in deep learning as children progress through the school, thus enabling them to retain their learning and use and apply their knowledge and skills in other contexts as they become global citizens of the future. The curriculum is assessed against key end of year milestones using Working Towards, Expected and Greater Depth criteria. This information is used to inform our planning of the curriculum. We listen to the voices of our children and allow their areas of interest and natural curiosity to contribute to our curriculum planning and delivery. Our curriculum makes good use of practical resources, first hand learning experiences, visits to other settings and the knowledge, expertise and experience of experts and subject specialists. We focus on developing the whole child through the promotion of sport, the arts and personal, social and emotional development.
Through the implementation and delivery of our curriculum, we aim for all children to make progress across all areas of learning. We define progress as the widening and deepening of knowledge, skills, understanding and behaviours. Our children will work through a basic knowledge through to an advancing knowledge resulting in a deep knowledge that can be used and applied in a variety of contexts and be purposeful to their futures.
